How to make Home-made Playdough

We can make Playdough with different textures, smells and color. What if each classroom in a center makes a different colored Playdough with a different smell?


Here are some sample recipes for you to explore. You can have children create and think about the different types of Playdough they can create.

Jello Playdough

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 2 tablespoons of cream of tartar
  • 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 3 ounces of jello - any flavor you wish

Directions:  Combine ingredients and cook over medium hear until it thickens. Knead until cool enough to touch. Takes about 8 minutes.

Gingerbread Playdough

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup salt
  • 2 teaspoons cream of tartar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil
  • Spices: Cinnamon, Allspice, Ginger & Nutmeg

Directions:  Mix the dry ingredients all together. Add small amounts of the spices you prepared to the mix until it smells great. Mix water and oil in a separate bowl, then mix together both bowl into a large pan. It needs to cook for two to three minutes, or until it is dough-like.
